THE MPEX APP

Building a New Communication Bridge between Bank and Clients
(2019-11-29, Kampala) The mPEX Mobile App, helping agri-businesses in Uganda, is ready for testing. The App builds a new communication bridge between Centenary Bank and its clients; allowing clients to open a bank account, apply for and manage a loan from their mobiles. Supported by our mentored peer exchange service, the App delivers enhanced financial inclusion for all players in agriculture and food value chains.

The Chief Manager of Agricultural Credit, Centenary Bank, Evans Nakhokho stated, “I am excited, after waiting for two years the App has now become a reality.”

Developers from SoftwareGroup together with Peter Luder (mPEX Director of Technology), Clive Lightfoot (mPEX CEO) and Roy Yiga (mPEX Country Manager) conducted a series of training and testing exercises with their client Centenary Bank. Members from Centenary’s IT team and business banking team tested the Administration portal and mobile application.

SoftwareGroup’s Project Manager Faisal Addae commented: “Now Centenary Bank is in a good position to launch the scale-up phase of the project next year, 2020. I can confidently say that we have been successful in this delivery and we look forward to work together with all the stakeholders to start the scale up-phase in January 2020.”Our team of mentors tested the App and is now ready to train agricultural extension officers and development partners to use the App with their clients. mPEX will incorporate feedback from these test sessions into a final version of the App to ‘Go Live’ in 2020 for use by Centenary Bank’s customers.

mPEX Country Manager Roy Yiga reported “We’ve had some very positive reactions to the new App, and we are looking forward to testing it with Centenary Bank’s clients in the new year.”

TRAINING OF THE TRAINERS
(2019-09-01, Kampala) Training on the use of the mPEX seasonal business management tool for the mPEX mentors and Centenary Bank’s loan officers; led by mPEX’s banking consultant James Weaver.

Ssekiziyivu Atanansi, loan officer at Centenary Bank: “This is the way to go, as the bank is growing we – loan officers – also need to grow in the same direction. For our clients, some who borrow billions will appreciate this tool to help them to make realistic projections more easily, and the bank will understand the projections better with this tool. It will help the client and the bank to agree on the financing, repayments and the structuring of the facility.”

ABOUT THE MPEX APP
(2019-08-20 Kampala) The objective of the Pilot Project “mPEX APP” is to increase financial inclusion for the unbanked SMEs in the agriculture sector.

We are implementing an AATIF financed project to expand Financial Inclusion in Africa’s Agricultural Sector with Centenary Bank. We are developing a mobile phone application to link small/medium-scale sized enterprises in agriculture value chains with commercial banks. With our mobile app small/medium-scale sized enterprises can open an account, agree a seasonal operational loan, track and share key business and financial data with the bank to guide timely loan repayments. In addition we also provide a mentored peer exchange learning service through WhatsApp to support small/medium-scale sized enterprises use their mobile app effectively.
